    noveling dream
I almost never dream about one of my works in progress--but last night I did, and it was a doozy. I dreamed that I and my boyfriend (who bore no resemblance to anyone I've ever known or to anyone in the Jo book), along with some other guy, were committing acts of political violence vaguely similar to acts committed by characters in the Jo book. But as the dream went on, I realized I wasn't comfortable with doing this stuff, though I'd believed in it a romanticized, abstract way, and I didn't want anyone else to find out what I was doing, especially not my mom. Then it occurred to me that if I kept doing this stuff, I wouldn't be able to publish the Jo book, because it would implicate me! So I told my boyfriend, "We need to talk."

"Is this about relationship stuff?" he asked with trepidation.

"No. Surprise! It's political," I replied...

    A little bat-something
    For [info]hico

Edward Nygma sat alone in his question-mark encrusted lair, fuming. Every year it was the same. Children everywhere singing. “Jingle bells, Batman smells...” Okay, that much was true. But it was the last line of the little ditty that burned him. “And Joker got away.”

Joker. Always the Joker. Clown prince of crime. The twistedly funny one.

As far as Nygma was concerned, Joker’s jokes were nowhere near as funny as one of his riddles.

Why the Joker? Not exactly a riddle, but a good question.

A bat-shaped shadow appeared at the window. “Riddler. I’ve found you.”

    Oh. That’s why.

    A sequel, in drabble form
One of my very early Spikefics. Spikin' The Tardis.

    For [info]evenstar_estel

Spike heard a familiar wheezing, groaning sound, and wasn’t surprised by the appearance of the blue box. He was surprised by the tall, slim man in the brown suit who emerged from it.

“Thought you were a bloke called The Doctor. Didn’t know these Tardis thingies were so common.”

“I am The Doctor. New face, same man.” He held out his hand. “Spike! It’s been ages. How’s your Buffy?”

“Thinks I’m dead. How’s your Grace?”

“Grace? It’s been ages. Now Rose... But she’s gone too.”

“I was thinking. About that offer to travel with you...”

    “Sorry, Spike. I travel alone.”

    Mom
After the Rehab Centre fiasco, we found the place Mom is staying. I worked Wednesday to Friday but went there on Saturday, and found it takes even less time to get there than I thought. While I'm nervous of walking around that area after dark, since it's so close to drive my husband says he can pick me up there if I go after work. Even so, I'm trying to get Christmas Eve off so I can spend most of the day with her before heading to her house to help my brother get Christmas dinner ready. Since dinner will be my two brothers, my husband and myself (since the kids are having dinner at the in-lawsish people's houses) we're also hoping to head over to the Centre and surprise her Christmas Day. *shhhhhh*

Today we went to take the presents to the house and give my brother his belated birthday present. While we were there, Mom called (she got a nurse to help) just so she could talk to someone. She's so darned lonely. They have her in a private room for some reason, when she would much prefer a roomie to keep her company. We didn't tell her that we were going to drop in for a bit, so she was so happy when my husband and I turned up. I helped her with dinner. It's so hard to know she's stuck there, and that time just ticks away slowly. I hope they'll start the physio soon - that will help occupy her. She says nights are the worst - she's not sleeping much.

She has a little more movement in her left arm than she did, so that's something. Unfortunately, since she's left-handed doing anything with the working side is a strain for her.

Here's a photo of Mom so you can see who I'm talking about.

She's good people. I hope things get better for her soon.

    Updating the update
Found the mp3 cables. Still haven't figured out where I stashed the printer paper.

Found the ethernet cable I was missing from the desktop. Located the silly network connection -- plugged everything in and voila we have achieved main internet connection for the poor desktop. Poor desktop still needs memory like whoa and thinks I'm a crazy woman for trying to run several updates at once. Not my fault you've been shut down for several weeks.

My entertainment center seems to confuse even the Comcast support person. The earliest they can send someone out is Tuesday which is the day before I leave for Florida. I think I'd rather wait until after I come home, if I can't figure it out myself before then.

    Snow-pocalypse 2009
    So to update my life:

The temp assignment ended on Friday with a bit of a whimper. The holiday party was on Thursday, so the bulk of the staff didn't bother coming in on Friday, so it was just the boss and me. That worked out well for a slow and leisurely day. During the day I learned about the impending snowstorm. So I trudged to the local store on the way home to load up on the essentials. Note to people in store: saving a place for someone in line is all nice and stuff, but when they bring in a massive cart of stuff? Don't expect the people behind you to be all friendly-like.

The snows are quite impressive. The white stuff has filled up the entirety of my non-balcony outside which makes for a scary sight. No power outages, thankfully. Hopefully all the roads and airports will be cleared in a few days when I disappear from DC for a week. Going from 30s to 60s/70s is going to be so much fun this year.

I spent some of the time emptying and deleting boxes, so I can return my apartment to some form of sanity. New bookshelves will just have to wait for the New Year, if at all. The amusing thing is I decided to try switching around some of the contents of said bookshelves to see if they'd fit better. So my skating shelf has been moved to a new location and I get to look at my writing and miscellaneous books from my bedside. [info]suricattus gets good company with Nick Bantock & Jasper Fforde.

The only snag in all of this is on the technological front. I put together the computer, only to lack an internet connection. I have a cable internet/router combination. I think I have the correct ethernet/modem cables I just can't figure what goes where. And my entertainment unit is *still* in shambles. I really should have written down instructions for that. For a self-proclaimed geek, dvd/vcr hookups are strange and mysterious things. Plus finding the paper for the printer and the mp3 player cables...

Writing wise, not much to report, other than Yuletide successfully written and uploaded. [info]remember_wenn is having its first annual fic fest in February and are taking prompts. I've dumped in a whole bunch of prompts.

    Christmas Spuffy drabble
    For [info]rebcake

Their first Christmas together after Hell-A, after all the other Slayers had turned in and Dawn was safely tucked in with Xander (he would never get used to that), Spike lay back on Buffy’s bed. She emerged from her bathroom wearing a filmy red negligee (that he could get used to) and a red velvet, fir-trimmed cap.

    “Merry Christmas, Spike.”

She pulled off the hat and placed it on his head, laughing. “Santa vamp.”

“Really?” He somehow managed to peel off his t-shirt without removing the hat and did a slow strip-tease with his jeans.

    “Oooh,” she exclaimed. “Santa baby!”

    noveling Saturday night
...and suddenly chapter 21 is in good shape. I should be able to finish it tomorrow. It's weird how, in my revision process, a chapter will suddenly turn a corner and go from half-baked incoherence to something...good. Now I can read and watch more early Dark Shadows (featuring Laura Collins the phoenix from Phoenix).

This afternoon I failed miserably to finish my holiday shopping at Skylight Books. Not only did I not manage to buy gifts there, but I bought myself two books: Marge Piercy's new poetry book The Crooked Inheritance and Dodie Bellamy's pamphlet Barf Manifesto. Oh well, I wanted to buy MORE books and didn't, and I am almost done with my holiday shopping.

    Silly little drabble
    For [info]sunnyd_lite

“Got a sweet tooth, Head Boy?”

Wes didn’t look up from the tome he was studying. “Go away Spike.”

“Just wondered. What with the candy cane and all.” Spike stepped through the desk.

    “Do you mind?”

“Oh.” Spike backed out again. “Want to see a trick?”

“Not particularly.” Aware that Spike was still standing in front of him, he looked up. “What?”

Spike concentrated and reached towards the candy. Slowly, he lifted it off the desk. “See?”

“Impressive.” Wes was serious. “Can you lick it?”

    “Ghost here. Besides, peppermint?”

“Sorry.” Wes returned to the book. “They don’t come in blood.”

His memory was just fine, thank you very much. A millennia...nine hundred years might dim the minds of lesser men, but not his. He could still remember the first time he flew a TARDIS, the feel of his companions' hands in his, how Rose smiled and Romana laughed. The silver trees on Gallifrey and the lilting sound of the wind through the branches. Sometimes memory was a curse.

Age wasn't the reason for the stickies everywhere. They were important calculations, vital to the operation of the TARDIS. Besides, didn't everyone write themselves a note to remember to buy milk?

    I can't feel my toes
    • Alas, have returned from the fabulousness that is Hawaii. Actually, I got back Sunday (omg, I hate 8 hr flights) and have had to shake the cobwebs out, dress for deep sea exploration the frigidness of -WTF degrees. I mean, really, -2???? Wasn't it like 40F before I went on this trip. Fortunately, I missed the snowpocalypse that buried the entire state last week. Even won the lottery and one of Robb's friend (yes, Cletus of killing my satellite service, crashing our party fame) was nice enough to come out and plow our 200 meter driveway so we could actually get up to the house when we returned.

    • Kelly + Body Board + Really Big Waves = KERBLAMMO. Totally my fault. Okay, so I got bold while boogie boarding. Got bored with the little 3 foot waves that were a fun ride to shore and stupidly rode the top of a huge 6 footer. When looking down from 6 feet up, it's a bad thing to start thinking to yourself, Self, this ain't gonna end well. Needless to say, getting pounded into the beach knee first by a tanker truck or three worth of water feels like being piled driven by, well, a tanker truck. The knee is still a lovely shade of purple, but fortunately, I did not blow my knee out. The Husband, on the other hand, managed to avoid such stupidity while boogie boarding and even managed to haul his bad self up on a surf board as well. I think I'll leave the adrenaline sports to him and stick to safer things like snorkeling.
    • Fruity drinks in paradise are as good as they sound.
    • It was the beginning of the Humpback season in Maui. Never saw any superclose, but did catch a couple breaching off the coast on a few occasions. Also saw a pod of a mother, newborn calf and a male escort . VERY COOL!
    • If you are ever in Maui and are looking for a vegetarian/vegan/gluten free restauant, Mala at the Marriott in Wailea is just awesome. Dishes are labled as vegan/veg/GF and also labeled if they can altered to become vegan/veg/GF. And the fish is pretty yum as well.
    • Speaking of yummy fish, I love butterfish. Silky, buttery texture. Why is it so silky? Because, as I ironically ound out on the plane ride home while finally reading my copy of Mother Jones that butterfish is a rebranded name for escolar, aka Hawaiian Walu, aka the Exlax Fish. It is packed full of waxy esters. What are waxy esters? Put it this way, remember those Olestra "Low Fat" Chips that were the rage in the late nineties? You could eat a few, but if you ate a bunch, you had an intestinal revolt on par with a Third World coup? Well, that same undigestable substance that has a fatty feel but isn't absorbed by the body is quite plentiful in the beloved Butterfish. Eric Ripert loves butterfish, so it can't be bad, right? It's sold in schmancy restaurants. I love it. But like those Olestra Doritos, a little goes a long way.

    • Since The Husband and I were gone for 8 days (kids went to the grandparents' place) I am woefully behind for the holidays. Kids staged a revolt because we didn't have a tree up. Remedied that yesterday. Didn't want to put one up before we left because last year, we put up a tree at the beginning of December. It died. I mean, deader than dead. Crispy brown needles falling off it just by glancing at it by December 14th. Tried to limp along until Christmas, but the needles starting falling off by the poundful, and I was swapping it out by the 18th. Wasn't going to go through that again.
    • Was finalizing some errands for Santa yesterday. We decided that the Sidekick was ready for a a two-wheeler wtih training wheels. So I picked it up yesterday afteroon, only to realize, as my sitter needed the day off, that I needed to pick her sister the Sprog up from school instead of her taking the bus to the sitter's house. Luckily said two-wheeler is one of those small fry versions that I could wedge into the trunk of my wee little car. Wonder how many years I have left before the Evil Monkeys realize I hide birthday gifts and stuff from Santa in my car. I mean, what kid is going to pop the trunk of mom's car to see what is in there? It's usually boring stuff like groceries (that reminds me, I can't grocery shop until I hide the bike in the garage) and jumper cables.
    • And in more irritating news, my church had its first vote to sever ties with the ELCA. Needless to say, the measure passed. There will be another vote in no less than 90 days. If both pass, my church will break ties with the ELCA and join the Lutheran Congregations in Ministry for Christ, or as I like to call them the Antigay, Homophobic Orthodox Faux Lutheran Synod. I was angry Monday night after the vote. In the end, it is coming down to a battle for the property. The ministers and the bluehair conservatives have all but left the ELCA already (my asshat minister whom I used to adore has publicly declared that homosexuality is a choice and that it can be cured with enough intervention.) Yes, this is a battle for the building. If they leave the ELCA, it is written in the constitution of the church that they get to keep the building. the core group of us opposed to all of this crap has decided that, fine, let them leave. Have fun paying off the bills for the addition built a few years ago with only part of the congregation footing the bill. Have fun when congregants didn't realize they had signed on to some truly fundamental, orthodox crap. We're bigger than that. We're going to emerge from the ashes and start up a new ELCA congregation here in BFE, Wisconsin. So we may be gathering in a local theater or gymnasium for a few years. We value our, well, values of dignity, inclusiveness and human right over the property rights for a church on Elizabeth Avenue. Those remain values worth fighting for, but I think it is time to divorce ourselves from the hatemongers and focus on a more positive future.

    Miss Bossy Boots
I like telling people what to do. I'm good at it. I make a living at it. I say jump, and others say "how high?" If that were necessary, which it's not, because I've already negotiated a contract that specifies height, depth, and width. Literally.

But some things I can't control. Like the UGF going into emergency surgery on Friday. There's nothing I can do about that. I cannot tell A to be at B at such a time to do C, and don't fuck up, damnit, because that's my life you're cutting into, my heart, my raison d'etre.

All I can do is wait, and worry, and love, and shake the cat's litterbox twice a day.

One step forward, two steps... sideways?
This was a weird old day.

I got up at the usual work time (so glad I did nothing Sunday, because that's the last of that for awhile) and headed out to Scarborough for a doctor's appointment. Got my seasonal flu shot and a blood test (poor prickly arm).

Then it was off to see that Mom got settled in to the rehab centre. Only thing was - she wasn't there. One helpful woman checked for me and found out she was at the centre on King St., not University and Dundas. Unfortunately I didn't have time to go look for her...

...Because I had to go get my Social Insurance card replaced from the wallet that is no more. Luckily, that's near a subway and one stop from my place. I say luckily, because when I got through the line the fellow told me I had the wrong ID. So back home for my birth certificate and marriage certicate, and off to the government office again. Followed by a longer line and a wait that rivaled the one in the doctor's office.

All sorted now, though. Had I seen Mom, I might not have made it there (twice) in time.

I'm tired though. Wish me a good night's sleep (for once.)
